History

Phoebe is the daughter of forensics expert Anne McAllister. During her first grade year at Saint Claire's Catholic School, when her teacher (a rather orthodox and strict nun) learned that she had been born out of wedlock, Phoebe became a social outcast after her status as an illegitimate child was revealed during a lesson about the sacrament of marriage, and struggled for much of her childhood trying to win friends. She was a mediocre soccer and softball player, a decidedly average student, and a so-so actress in any number of school plays. She had a very small circle of casual friends, but only enjoyed a close relationship with her mother Anne. Phoebe, it seemed, spent most of her time daydreaming, rather than paying attention to the task at hand. Intelligence tests confirmed that she was actually a very gifted child with a near-photographic memory, but she had difficulty focusing on anything, and she was diagnosed with mild attention deficit disorder. When she was nine, she began suffering from severe mood swings and suffering bouts of depression which would plague her all her life. After being taken off of a cocktail of medication for her mood disorders, Phoebe often hid her emotional turmoil from others behind a relentlessly cheerful, fun-loving personality, and she became fiercely competitive in high school, as an attempt to win more friends by working harder at it than anyone.

Phoebe was actually not the first hero who called herself "Shift". She received her powers from the first Shift an alien shapechanger who had been living as a normal person in the guise of her next-door neighbor. One day, she discovered the true identity of her neighbor as the first Shift lay dying. Shift told her that the world still needed someone with his powers, so before he died, he endowed Phoebe with all of his powers. With his death, Shift left Phoebe to discover her powers for herself.

In early March, 2006, Phoebe was contacted by a being called Kerian, who claimed to be an angel trapped in an orbiting computer. He recruited her to join his group of super-powered peacekeepers, called the GEHIRN. A few days later, she and another GEHIRN recruit called Ronin (then called Kageri) teamed up. They were later joined by the metahuman hunter-turned-hero Hunter X. Much later, while in Japan doing battle with Ronin's family, the Mitsugi, Scion helped to rescue a young man called Edgewalker, who later joined the team. She is the heart of the team, trying to support her teammates both emotionally and in combat. Shift is kind to a fault, always trying to help her teammates with dark pasts, and turning the other cheek to her enemies. Unfortunately, as a young woman trying to fill the role of a hero from the past, she is also incredibly self-conscious about her abilities and her contributions to the team. Normally, she tries to be boastful and loud enough to distract others from this reservation, but she does occasionally admit to her friends these feelings of inadequacy. She is particularly envious of Ronin, who she considers to be much more powerful and mature than she is.

Eventually, she discovered that her father was none other than the infamous Walker, a particularly evil planeswalker with near-godlike power, and that the GEHIRN organization had conspired with Ardent and Nano to secret nanites into her body when she was very young to keep the power she inherited from her father from being realized. While preparing for the arrival of Drakotek's all-powerful Dragon, Scion had her nanites removed by Walker's henchman, a shapeshifter called Journey. She had her father's Primal Force Control powers unlocked in exchange for a device necessary to battle the Dragon, and she manifested them explosively not long afterwards for the first time. They were, at first, barely under her control, but she gradually learned to harness that power when she and her friends were sent traveling across worlds by her father after learning that GEHIRN was actually controlled by villains. She fled with her friends to different worlds.

House of Walker

In the House of Walker reality, Phoebe was Emperor Walker's only daughter, heiress to the entire planet. She never received Shift's powers, so her body was still organic, leaving her to focus more on her ability to reshape matter. After fleeing from a demonic incursion with the alternate versions of her friends, she was flung into the future with them, where they found the dying world tree, Yggdrasil. Through this, they traveled to a strange circus where their memories were restored. They traveled next through Yggdrasil to a world where dinosaurs roamed the world. On this world, much of the mental damage caused by Phoebe's nanites was undone, thanks to the efforts of her friends Ronin, Edgewalker, and Rush.

Mundania

In the Mundania reality, Phoebe was an ordinary schoolgirl living with her parents Anne and Nicholas Walker, and a longtime friend of her teammates (though none of them had any superpowers). Upon learning of the concept of hitsuzen, she had her memories of her old life restored. In doing so, she realized that she was only one of Phoebe's duplicates, that crossing this planar barrier had ripped Phoebe apart mentally and physically. She suffered from severe depression for some time before discovering that her father Walker in this world had been infected with lycanthropy. She and her friends also managed to find a book called the Midgard Tome, which allowed them to travel safely to other worlds.

Creation

After traveling from world to world via the Midgard Tome and recovering her scattered duplicates, Phoebe and her friends learned that Ronin’s aunt Isame Mitsugi had actually feigned her insanity to cover her ascension to the level of a planeswalker, and that Journey was actually her son, Ryu. With the aid of Singularity and Doc Volcano, Phoebe was able to craft an entire plane of existence out of pure crystal, which was empathically tied to her power (enabling her to reshape it at will). It was here that Phoebe learned that her power made her a Scion, a mortal being with the power immortal beings like planeswalkers and demigods commanded. She took the name "Scion" as her new codename. It was from this plane that the first forays were launched against the overlord Aeon, and the invasion by a being called Jabberwhacky forced them to return to their home plane.

The Return

Upon their return to the GEHIRN reality, Scion, Kageri (who had taken the name Ronin), and Edgewalker joined forces with Sentinel to defeat Aeon’s assembled forces, and then Aeon himself. After Edgewalker left the group for personal reasons, they recruited the aid of Aurum and later Jade Phoenix to help return to the chores of patrolling and protecting Arcadia City, which had changed quite a bit since their departure almost a full year earlier. Saint Claire’s was closed, Phoebe’s mother was moving to a new home, and the city just seemed so different.

It was during this time that Scion was first attacked by Shell and the alien shapeshifter Shift, who was believed to be dead. They kidnapped her and told her friends that she was destined to unleash terrible destruction upon the multiverse, so for the good of many, she must be killed. Ronin disagreed and led an assault with Aurum and Ardent to recover her friend. During an investigation into mysterious murders in Arcadia and in Japan, Scion was exposed to the Null Force for the first time, the antithesis of the Primal Force which powers her, culminating in a clash that nearly destroyed her and the Null Force wielder Lyla. She recovered in time to help defeat Aurum’s son from the future Electrum with the help of Ronin, Phoenix, and her father. Shortly thereafter, the fallen god Void took interest in Scion, trying to turn her into a weapon he could use against the immortals who cast him down. His plan was stopped by a combined effort from Anne McAllister, Aurum, Nanite, Nano, Phoenix, and Ronin and Scion's energy form dissipated, returning her to normal.

During a tour of a school for psychics in Ireland, Scion and her friends were taken prisoner, and the Sovereign Earth Project revealed that it had been utilizing cloning and genetic manipulation to breed psychic super-soldiers based on the genetic templates of their earliest students. A version of Scion from another world, a girl called Katherine Doe, who was dying of an unknown illness, was brought to E-010 by the SEP, presumably as a source for tissue samples. Worse, Doctor Robin Ni was revealed to still be alive, and working for the SEP (much to Ronin's horror). The heroes managed to rally and escape after several attempts, following a coup by Doctor Ni. The heroes freed themselves from a psychic trap he'd laid and chased him and his small retinue of clones as they tried to cross the sea to England, intercepting his ship and killing him and almost all of the clones on board (only Elisa 038, an empathic healer, survived and was taken in by the heroes).

Some time later, during an investigation about prisoner abuse and mind control at Arcadia's Metahuman Prison, Scion's boyfriend, Inspector Ramirez was caught on tape kissing her best friend Ronin. She was devistated, and threatened to leave the team following Olympian's murder of a small-time metahuman criminal (who had himself just killed the mayor's secretary). Shortly thereafter, Ronin's sword Tejuna animated and drew Ronin into Mugenjigoku, a Buddhist hell of eternal suffering. She joined with her friends to cross a set of demiplanes formed by the nightmares of dead gods called the Godsrealms. She wound up agreeing with her friends to allow Fallout's older brother and sister (a pair of mad scientists) to follow them as they crossed other planes. Scion began to show her potential as a team leader after she helped coordinate the team's battle against mirror images of themselves. When they finally reached Mugenjigoku, Scion posed as an evil version of herself to demand access to the stronghold, and the heroes (with the aid of the soul of Ronin's father, Akira Mitsugi) were able to barely defeat Tejuna and free a badly-injured Ronin.

Scion helped in the construction of Ronin's school (helping her new boyfriend Sora Aranami) and worked hard at school in an effort to get into college, but was ventured into the planes once again at her father Nicholas Walker's behest to learn more about herself and her powers. She returned a week later to the city under siege by the Nullocks, whose connection to the Null Force weakened Scion and forced her to the sidelines while her friends battled their leader, Judgment, and defeat her.

Arcadia Rising

Weeks after the invasion, Scion helped to defeat Chromium and revive Aurum following his death (which was instrumental in defeating Judgment). She had a slight falling-out with her friends when she refused to break the law to help rescue Ronin's young charge Syphon from an unfair arrest, instead focusing her energy on learning the secrets behind the Highgarden Affair and rallying like-minded people of Arcadia to stage a demonstration in Atlas Park dedicated to metahuman and normal human unity. She rejoined her friends to fight off sabotuers sent by both Quentin Chase and Graydon Creed, who stood at opposite ends of the spectrum on metahuman relations. They fought them off and managed to use Scion's demonstration to quell the riots.

Scion's family was struck by tragedy after tragedy a week later. First, her father lost his job (accused of plagiarism when he used his old photographs from before he ascended as a planeswalker), and then Ronin's secret identity was revealed on national television. Her ex-boyfriend Inspector Ramirez was fired from the police department on corruption charges, along with her mother, leaving the McAllister family in dire straights. Just days later, Scion was framed for an attack on Mayor Quentin Chase. She turned herself in for questioning, and when she was eventually released, she learned that her father had been shot and her mother had been poisoned by the serial killer Brilliant (who was seeking revenge against Anne McAllister for outsmarting her during Anne's adventuring days; Ronin tortured and executed Brilliant for her crime). While her friends ventured to another world with her other self Katherine and Inspector Ramirez to find an ingredient that Ardent thought could save her mother's life.

While allegedly "vacationing" in Japan for the wedding of Ryo Shousaku and Kaiya Tenjou, Phoebe was taken by the planeswalker Isame Mitsugi for some rather extreme training in her powers, which did begin to pay off dividends for her. She stuck with the team through the time-warping affair, but she was thrown out of the Corps after disagreeing with Sentinel about how to deal with a pair of captured and dangerous mad scientists. Once Sentinel was freed from the Nictus Shard's influence, she was allowed to rejoin the Corps and was put back in charge as her squad's leader and she helped to rescue Aurum after he was possessed by the supervillain Primus of Opera, later leading the charge against Primus directly in his moon-base. After Primus' defeat, Scion began to have doubts about her mother becoming engaged to Nicholas Walker, doubts compounded by nervousness at starting college and only made worse by an unexpected trip to alien worlds. On those worlds, Scion discovered that the attempt on her life made by Shift that began unlocking her powers also left her connected to the hive-mind that controlled a race of shapeshifting alien parasites called the Faceless. The connection caused Scion significant discomfort, but it allowed her to help her friends track down the Faceless hiding among the interplanetary bureaucracy and stop their takeover attempt.

Powers and Abilities

Scion's connection to the Primal Force gives her a limited degree of control over the area around her, allowing her to change the shape of matter and energy. Her powers are still quite weak, but she is able to literally change the battlefield for herself and her allies with a wave of her hand, slamming into her foes with slabs of earth and pavement and making it difficult for them to move or maneuver. More recently, Scion has begun to master her control over energy. Thanks to this growing skill, she can still protect herself against attacks by dissipating the energy of attacks and, in the case of projectiles, actually breaking the missiles apart in mid-air. This proves dangerous for enemies who try to strike her up-close, as Scion's power can seriously injure a melee attacker. The energy Scion absorbs from attacks can then be focused and channeled into her own attacks, making attacks against her doubly-risky. She can focus the energy absorbed from an enemy's attack so tightly that the beam it produces can punch through most of the toughest defenses, more than making up for what it lacks in reliability with penetrating power.

With her shapeshifting abilities on the wane, Scion's connection to the Primal Force also seems to be more and more capable of spurring life. Healing abilities used while she is channeling the Primal Force tend to be more effective, and her own ability to heal wounds seems to have increased in potency.

The other talent Scion brings to the table is her growing comfort as her team's field leader. While she started out as little more than an enthusiastic cheerleader for her friends, she's starting to learn to think ahead and turn her natural creativity and cleverness towards tactics and strategy. Scion still has a long way to go, but she might yet be a real leader some day.

Role on the Team

As she learns more and more about her powers, and becomes more comfortable acting as her team's field leader, Scion becomes more and more effective controlling the overall shape and flow of battle. Her optimism and enthusiasm are slowly but surely being matched by her ability and knowledge. With very little effort, Scion can change the shape of the battlefield to make it more helpful to her allies and more difficult to her foes, and then press the advantage by coordinating with her teammates. Scion's powers are quite effective at range, and while her shapeshifting powers have waned from her early days with GEHIRN, she's still a formidable hand-to-hand fighter, especially when she wreathes herself with the Primal Force, thanks in large part to the additional martial-arts training she's received from her friend Ronin and Gauntlet.
