History

The Child of Walker

While working as a young agent for GEHIRN, Anne McAllister's investigations with her friend Nano led the two of them to trail a mysterious man known only as Walker. It took them months to track him down, but eventually Anne met the evil planeswalker face-to-face, and while she was an almost insignificant power compared to him, she had the audacity to talk down to him. Intrigued, the cogs in Walker's head began spinning, and he decided that this afforded him the opportunity to continue his wars with a trump up his sleeve. So Walker seduced Anne, and some weeks later, she learned that she was pregnant with his child.

Anne tried to convince Walker to turn over a new leaf, but he was unrepentant, and Anne struggled with the choices facing her, eventually chosing to have her daughter, who she named Phoebe Katherine McAllister. Almost immediately after her birth, Walker sent some of his agents after Anne and the baby, and when she evaded his top hunters, he was forced to go after Anne and Phoebe himself, only to be blocked by a power-play by his old nemesis, the planeswalker called Chaos.

To insure that Phoebe would be safe from Walker, Anne agreed to allow GEHIRN to infuse her with nanotechnology designed to cut off her natural connection to the Primal Force and seal away her powers forever, allowing her to be raised as an ordinary girl. But the machinery was imperfect, and while it did prevent her from accessing her powers, it also caused severe damage to her brain.

Early Life

Suffering from seizures throughout her childhood that led her to be labeled as "the weird kid", Phoebe struggled for much of her childhood trying to win friends. Phoebe was a mediocre soccer and softball player, a decidedly average student, and a so-so actress in any number of school plays. By the time she reached high school, she had only a very small circle of casual friends, but only enjoyed a close relationship with her mother Anne. Phoebe, it seemed, spent most of her time daydreaming, rather than paying attention to the task at hand. Ever since she was young, Phoebe liked to make scrapbooks of the superheroes of Arcadia City, and had quite a collection, especially of the Olympian and Paladin by the time she reached high school

Intelligence tests confirmed that she was actually a very gifted child with a near-photographic memory, but she had difficulty focusing on anything, and suffered from crippling headaches even when she was seizure-free for months at a time. Doctors were unable to determine the cause of her seizures, or her headaches, and treated her symptoms with modest success throughout her childhood. Her seizures made her a frequent visitor to Arcadia General's emergency department. Despite her medical problems, Phoebe remained relentlessly cheerful and bright most days, even while inwardly feeling miserable. Her upbeat attitude began to pay dividends and help her begin to break through the ostracism she suffered while younger, but it wasn't until her sophomore year of high school at St. Claire's that things began to turn around in earnest for her.

Gaining Powers

For years, Phoebe had done chores and odd-jobs for her neighbor, never knowing that he was actually an alien superhero called Shift. One day, while still a sophomore in high school, the alien feigned injury and claimed that he needed to give Phoebe his powers to carry on his legacy before he died. This was in actuality a carefully-planned ruse, as the alien had grown convinced that Phoebe, as Walker's daughter, was too dangerous to be left alive, and needed to be killed before she managed to manifest her true powers. As one of the Faceless, Shift thought that he could poison her body and she would be unable to survive as a mass of unstable molecules. But her connection with the Primal Force, even nascent and unawakened, was enough to sustain her. It would be over a year before Phoebe discovered that this was an assassination attempt, and at first, she was thrilled to have superpowers.

She spent the next few months, with her mother's help, learning to use her new abilities, and began fighting supervillains on her own, taking up the legacy of the alien who had tried to kill her and calling herself "Shift". During that time, she made enemies of the Coven, Doctor Robertson, Pixel, and Plasma, but managed to find a lasting friend and mentor in the supervillain-turned-repentant hero Ardent, who became her source of medical care and information about her strange new powers.

Joining GEHIRN

In early March, 2006, Phoebe was contacted by a being called Kerian, who claimed to be an angel trapped in an orbiting computer. He recruited her to join his group of super-powered peacekeepers, called the GEHIRN, and teamed her up with another young woman named Kageri (who would later go by the name Ronin and a regenerating swordsman named Hunter X. Much later, while in Japan doing battle with Ronin's family, the Mitsugi, she helped to rescue a young man called Edgewalker, who later joined the team. She often felt outmatched by her teammates and envious of their confidence, and struggled to make sure that she was a help and not a burden to her teammates.

Eventually, she discovered that her father was none other than the infamous Walker, and that the GEHIRN organization had conspired with Ardent and Nano to secret nanites into her body when she was very young to keep the power she inherited from her father from being realized. This was a particularly painful revelation for the girl, was terrified at the notion of turning out to be like her father. While preparing for the arrival of Drakotek's all-powerful Dragon, she had her nanites removed by Walker's henchman, a shapeshifter called Journey. She had her father's Primal Force Control powers unlocked in exchange for a device necessary to battle the Dragon, and she manifested them explosively not long afterwards for the first time. They were, at first, barely under her control, but she gradually learned to harness that power when she and her friends were sent traveling across worlds by her father after learning that GEHIRN was actually controlled by villains. She fled with her friends to different worlds.

Across the Planes

The young heroes found themselves hopping from plane to plane, taking on different lives and memories with each jump. In the House of Walker reality, Phoebe was Emperor Walker's only daughter, heiress to the entire planet, and they discovered the World Tree, Yggdrasil, and learned of the infinite expanse of the omniverse. When they reached the Mundania reality, Phoebe was an ordinary schoolgirl living with her parents Anne and Nicholas Walker, and a longtime friend of her teammates (though none of them had any superpowers). It was there that they first discovered a Midgard Tome and how to travel the planes safely.

After traveling from world to world via the Midgard Tome and recovering her scattered duplicates, Phoebe and her friends learned that Ronin's aunt Isame Mitsugi had actually feigned her insanity to cover her ascension to the level of a planeswalker, and that Journey was actually her son, Ryu. With the aid of Singularity and Doc Volcano, Phoebe was able to craft an entire plane of existence out of pure crystal, which was empathically tied to her power (enabling her to reshape it at will). Singularity explained that she was a "scion", a mortal being with the power immortal beings like planeswalkers and demigods commanded. She took the name "Scion" as her new codename, and under Isame's direction, began launching forays against the Aeon. They were eventually evicted from the plane by the creature called Jabberwhacky, and forced into a final showdown with Aeon in the heart of their own world, almost a full year after they'd left. In a tremendous display of teamwork and perserverence, Scion, Ronin, and Edgewalker joined forces with Sentinel to defeat Aeon’s assembled forces, and then Aeon himself. The battle nearly leveled the city, but Walker, in a tremendous display of paternal affection, burned out his connection to the Primal Force undoing all the damage which the battle did to the city.

The Birth of Aegis

To fill the vaccuum left by GEHIRN's defeat, Sentinel invited the team to join him as part of a new group, called Aegis. Phoebe and her friends tried to adjust and pick up where their lives left off, both as young heroes and as regular people. They recruited new members, including the now-famous hero Aurum and Phoenix, and began to build a team that could protect both the city of Arcadia and the whole world. Battling foes like Aurum's evil son from the future, Electrum, the fallen god Void, and Ronin's old nemesis Robin Ni, the evil mastermind behind the Sovereign Earth Project. When Ronin proposed opening a school to help educate and protect the children they rescued from the Sovereign Earth Project, Sentinel agreed, and they chose to reopen the now-closed St. Claire's as a secret school for metahumans.

Some time later, during an investigation into prisoner abuse and mind control at Arcadia's Metahuman Prison, Scion's boyfriend, Inspector Ramirez was caught on tape kissing her best friend Ronin. She was devistated, and threatened to leave the team following Olympian's murder of a small-time metahuman criminal. But when Ronin's sword Tejuna animated and drew Ronin into Mugenjigoku, a Buddhist hell of eternal suffering, Scion joined with her friends to cross a set of demiplanes formed by the nightmares of dead gods called the Godsrealms, where she began to show her potential as a leader, helping to coordinate her team in battle. When they finally reached Mugenjigoku, Scion posed as an evil version of herself to demand access to the stronghold, and the heroes (with the aid of the soul of Ronin's father, Akira Mitsugi) were able to barely defeat Tejuna and free a badly-injured Ronin.

Scion helped in the construction of Ronin's school (helping her new boyfriend Sora Aranami) and worked hard at school in an effort to get into college, but ventured again into the planes once again at her father Nicholas Walker's behest to learn more about herself and her powers. She spent a week traveling from world to world with her own Midgard Tome, meeting different versions of herself and, for the first time, starting to understand how her powers worked from how they manifested differently on other worlds. Eventually, she found herself facing off against an evil version of herself, who had also been traveling the planes, absorbing the power of their planar doubles in preparation for a cataclysm she'd been orchestrating to secure her own ascension as a planeswalker. Scion narrowly defeated her other self by unwittingly absorbing her power before hers could be absorbed, and she returned to Arcadia only to find the city under siege by the Nullocks. Their connection to the Null Force weakened Scion and forced her to the sidelines while her friends battled their leader, Judgment, and defeat her.

Arcadia Rising

Weeks after the invasion, Scion helped to defeat Chromium and revive Aurum following his death (which was instrumental in defeating Judgment). She had a slight falling-out with her friends when she refused to break the law to help rescue Ronin's young charge Syphon from an unfair arrest, instead focusing her energy on learning the secrets behind the Highgarden Affair and rallying like-minded people of Arcadia to stage a demonstration in Atlas Park dedicated to metahuman and normal human unity. She rejoined her friends to fight off sabotuers sent by both Quentin Chase and Graydon Creed, who stood at opposite ends of the spectrum on metahuman relations. They fought them off and managed to use Scion's demonstration to quell the riots.

Scion's family was struck by tragedy after tragedy a week later. First, Nick Walker lost his job (accused of plagiarism when he used his old photographs from before he ascended as a planeswalker), and then Ronin's secret identity was revealed on national television. Her ex-boyfriend Inspector Ramirez was fired from the police department on corruption charges, along with her mother, leaving the McAllister family in dire straights. Just days later, Scion was framed for an attack on Mayor Quentin Chase. She turned herself in for questioning, and when she was eventually released, she learned that her father had been shot and her mother had been poisoned by the serial killer Brilliant (who was seeking revenge against Anne McAllister for outsmarting her during Anne's adventuring days; Ronin tortured and executed Brilliant for her crime). While her friends ventured to another world with her other self Katherine and Inspector Ramirez to find an ingredient that Ardent thought could save her mother's life, she stayed at Anne's side, using her powers to stabilize her until her friends could return to save her.

While allegedly "vacationing" in Japan for the wedding of Ryo Shousaku and Kaiya Tenjou, Phoebe was taken by the planeswalker Isame Mitsugi for some rather extreme training in her powers, which did begin to pay off dividends for her. She stuck with the team through the time-warping affair, but she was thrown out of the Corps after disagreeing with Sentinel about how to deal with a pair of captured and dangerous mad scientists. Once Sentinel was freed from the Nictus Shard's influence, she was allowed to rejoin the Corps and was put back in charge as her squad's leader. When the second Aurum was possessed by the supervillain Primus of Opera, Scion helped to drive him out of Aurum's mind, and was able to lead the charge against Primus directly in his moon-base. After Primus' defeat, Scion began to have doubts about her mother becoming engaged to Nicholas Walker, doubts compounded by nervousness at starting college and only made worse by an unexpected trip to alien worlds. On those worlds, Scion discovered that the attempt on her life made by Shift that began unlocking her powers also left her connected to the hive-mind that controlled a race of shapeshifting alien parasites called the Faceless. The connection caused Scion significant discomfort, but it allowed her to help her friends track down the Faceless hiding among the interplanetary bureaucracy and stop their takeover attempt.

College

At Arcadia City University, Phoebe found herself forced to juggle more than every. Her team began to disolve, beginning with Aurum's decision to leave Earth to marry an alien princess. Ronin, who had until then been staying with Phoebe at her mother's house, elected to leave the city and wander across the planet, finally ready to make peace with her past. Phoebe found herself working alongside the fire-controlling Blaze, who had been placed in her school by Aegis, and fighting alongside a boy named Joseph who claimed to be the Avatar of the universe itself, with control over space.

This new team helped to uncover a conspiracy hatched by a metahuman church, battle an evil immortal with the power to slay a god called Ragnarok, and do battle with a team of planar doubles assembled by Dark Scion. Phoebe in particular was devistated by the return of heroes from her childhood, the team led by Paladin, when several of its members expressed distrust in her because of her father's identity, and she was once again sidelined when weapons called darkguns, manufactured from scraps of Nullocks and using the Null Force, began to hit the streets, and Sentinel wouldn't allow her onto active duty again until the flow of weapons onto the streets had been stopped. Aegis suffered terrible losses at the hands of a resurgant GEHIRN, forcing Sentinel back into active duty, which led to a difficult conflict between Scion and the head of Aegis over who would lead the team. They managed to defeat and capture Database before he could reveal all of Aegis' secrets to the world, but not before he could sneak new laws through Congress that made their organization illegal, and Phoebe began dating a boy at her college named TJ, who had no idea of her powers or life as Scion.

Into the Light

Sentinel set to work rebuilding Aegis according to the new laws, and Blaze continued to enjoy the limelight she earned from unmasking herself in a trial to help put members of two infamous organized crime families in Arcadia into jail for life. During the rebuilding, Sentinel offered to take Scion and Blaze on a trip to Paris with their significant others, but their vacation was quickly interrupted by two time travelers, Rewind and the Keeper. They eventually sided with Rewind and agreed to stop a new threat called Conqueror, an artificial man built to kill Primus. Scion had to push her powers to new heights during the conflict, first stopping a massive attack from space from wiping out the capital city of Skeladrol, and then trying to save Olympian after his untimely death at the hands of Conqueror's accomplice. To her horror, Scion was able to bring Olympian's body back to life, but without his soul, he was a mindless abomination, and the terrible potential of her powers began to terrify her. She was able to perservere long enough to help Blaze defeat Conqueror.

Powers and Abilities

Scion's connection to the Primal Force gives her a limited degree of control over the area around her, allowing her to change the shape of matter and energy. Her powers are still quite weak, but she is able to literally change the battlefield for herself and her allies with a wave of her hand, slamming into her foes with slabs of earth and pavement and making it difficult for them to move or maneuver. More recently, Scion has begun to master her control over energy. Thanks to this growing skill, she can still protect herself against attacks by dissipating the energy of attacks and, in the case of projectiles, actually breaking the missiles apart in mid-air. This proves dangerous for enemies who try to strike her up-close, as Scion's power can seriously injure a melee attacker. The energy Scion absorbs from attacks can then be focused and channeled into her own attacks, making attacks against her doubly-risky. She can focus the energy absorbed from an enemy's attack so tightly that the beam it produces can punch through most of the toughest defenses, more than making up for what it lacks in reliability with penetrating power.

With her shapeshifting abilities on the wane, Scion's connection to the Primal Force also seems to be more and more capable of spurring life. Healing abilities used while she is channeling the Primal Force tend to be more effective, and her own ability to heal wounds seems to have increased in potency.

The other talent Scion brings to the table is her growing comfort as her team's field leader. While she started out as little more than an enthusiastic cheerleader for her friends, she's starting to learn to think ahead and turn her natural creativity and cleverness towards tactics and strategy. Scion still has a long way to go, but she might yet be a real leader some day.

Role on the Team

As she learns more and more about her powers, and becomes more comfortable acting as her team's field leader, Scion becomes more and more effective controlling the overall shape and flow of battle. Her optimism and enthusiasm are slowly but surely being matched by her ability and knowledge. With very little effort, Scion can change the shape of the battlefield to make it more helpful to her allies and more difficult to her foes, and then press the advantage by coordinating with her teammates. Scion's powers are quite effective at range, and while her shapeshifting powers have waned from her early days with GEHIRN, she's still a formidable hand-to-hand fighter, especially when she wreathes herself with the Primal Force, thanks in large part to the additional martial-arts training she's received from her friend Ronin and Gauntlet.
