General History

The Mitsugi clan counts among its members some of the finest assassins and spies in the world; they have agents at work for all the major players on the world scene, although individual family members are not allowed to disclose the details of their assignments to anyone except the current head of the family. For generations, they’ve trained in a particularly forbidding region in Hokkaido; there they remain until they reach the age of eighteen, and there they stay unless on assignment. Adult members of the clan, however, usually find themselves busy with one job or another – everyone seeks the services of the Mitsugi clan, although their criteria for accepting clients are notoriously strict.

Agents of the Ashikaga shogunate sealed the mysterious Mitsugi clan in Mugenjigoku, the Buddhist hell of uninterrupted suffering, after rumors reached the shogun's ears about the how the Mitsugi traded with malevolent spirits to gain enough power to overthrow the shogunate. In Mugenjigoku, the clan's numbers dwindled; only the strongest clan members managed to weather the torment of the hell-dimension. Over time -- centuries in the normal world, but untold aeons in Mugenjigoku's reckoning -- the surviving Mitsugi learned to impose their will on the hell-dimension around them and shape it to their desires, a talent that may have emerged due to the mixing of Mitsugi and demonic bloodlines in addition to Judgment's interference. Clan members who could not master this skill were killed quickly so as not to drain the family's limited resources. Eventually, their exploits caught the attention of Mugenjigoku's most powerful overlords. They saw potential in the Mitsugi, and offered them a deal -- the Mitsugi would be allowed to leave their prison if they sent a tithe of souls to take their place in Mugenjigoku's fires. The clan accepted. The lords created three powerful swords as a physical symbol of the pact: Ten-no-Utan, a blade with an edge sharp enough to tear open the borders between dimensions; Tenkami, the sword of strength and leadership, given to the clan's head; and Tejuna, the sword that would deliver lost souls back to Mugenjigoku. With the Three Swords and their psionic powers, the Mitsugi re-entered Japan, ready to face the world that had cast them away.

The family rose to prominence once more during the Sengoku (Warring States) period in Japan, when Oda Nobunaga traveled far to seek their assistance in overthrowing the unstable Ashikaga shogunate. The Mitsugi were only too glad to slay their old jailers from the shadows, and they continued to assist Nobunaga and his successors from the Tokugawa clan in bringing Japan under unified rule once more. They didn’t embrace the isolationist tendencies of their countrymen – whether they sought fortune, dominance, fame, or immortality was unknown, but they managed to effectively hide themselves in places where they might gain power. By the time Japan emerged from isolation, the Mitsugi were ready to offer their homeland all the secrets of the western world.

Nowadays, the clan’s most common employers are the yakuza, although the Russian Mafiya makes use of their services more frequently ever since Yelena Suchenko married into the family. They’re far from the only ones, however; another super villain might well seek the services of a Mitsugi, and they’ve even worked for or alongside select groups of heroes when it’s in their best interest to do so.

The Mitsugi once allied themselves with GEHIRN’s villainous side— Akira Mitsugi entered his family into this arrangement, although it’s unclear as to exactly what this alliance entailed. Doctor Robin Ni also mentioned that the family had dealings with Drakotek in the past, presumably sponsoring the Hunter X program.

Although all members of the clan are deadly in combat, only the Inner Circle—the direct descendants of the first head of the clan—manifests powerful psionic abilities. Some lower-ranking members of the clan possess sorcerous abilities; these individuals are marked with a tattoo on their right hand.

House of Walker

In the House of Walker reality, although the Mitsugi remained a storied noble clan, their criminal activities were greatly toned down. They served as the Japanese Ambassadors to the Imperial Court of Nicholas Walker, and the family dynamics in general were far more subdued.

Mundania

In Mundania, the Mitsugi lost their paranormal abilities, but not their shady dealings—they lorded over the Japanese underworld as a feared yakuza family.

The Return

Upon her return to the world of GEHIRN, the young heroine Ronin led her friends (including Edgewalker, Isame Mitsugi, Scion, and Skye) to battle the Mitsugi. In the ensuing battle, several clan operatives were slain, including Akira Mitsugi. Control of the clan passed to Ronin, who then gave control of the Mitsugi to Ryo Shousaku. Under his leadership, the clan experienced a brief civil war, the oposition led by Yuki Mitsugi, as he worked to reform the clan (secretly developing a device which stripped subjects of free will).
